Diagnostic Medical Sonographer's Work
A diagnostic medical sonographer is a member of the healthcare team
responsible for the operation of complex imaging equipment in order to detect and diagnose a wide
range of medical conditions. They are usually involved in a procedure which is more popularly known
as an ultrasound, which makes use of sound waves in order to view what’s inside the patient’s body.
The duties and responsibilities of a diagnostic medical sonographer
involve a variety of tasks, starting with the preparation of patients for the imaging procedure.
They are the ones who take note of the medical history of patients while also ensuring that the
imaging procedure is properly explained to them. Before using the imaging equipment, a special gel
will be applied by the sonographer in order to maximize its imaging capabilities. Once the equipment
has been prepared, the sonographer will then use it to capture images of the patient’s body and then
it will be up to him to make sure that the quality of the images are acceptable and that the details
are sufficient in order for doctors to come up with a diagnosis. Sonographers will have to be
skilled enough to be able to distinguish abnormal and normal images and properly analyze them so
that doctors can use them for reference. They are also responsible for the documentation of their
findings, keeping track of records of patients, and maintenance of imaging equipment. Essentially,
diagnostic medical sonographers are responsible for guiding patients throughout the imaging process
so as to ensure that the procedure goes smoothly without any compromise to the safety of patients.
It must be noted also that sonographers are not qualified to discuss with the patient the results or
details of the imaging procedure.
In order to come up with internal images of the human body, diagnostic
ultrasound harnesses the power of high-frequency sound waves. A device known as an ultrasound
transducer is pressed by the sonographer against the body part of the patient that requires
examination. Echoes are formed when sound waves from the transducer bounces back and these are
interpreted by the ultrasound machine as recognizable images of the body.
There are different areas of specialization for diagnostic medical
sonographers and the most commonly is obstetric and gynecologic sonography. This is the area of
diagnostic imaging which concentrates on the female reproductive system, especially for pregnant
women who wish to check on the condition of their unborn child. Abdominal sonography deals with the
imaging of the abdominal cavity, as well as adjacent organs including liver, spleen, pancreas,
gallbladder, liver, and kidney. Ultrasound technicians may also specialize in the imaging of the
brain and the rest of the nervous system, which is primarily referred to as neurosonography. There
is also a specialization for the imaging of the muscles, tendons, joints, and ligaments and it is
well known in the healthcare field as musculoskeletal sonography. A sonographer can also choose to
specialize in the diagnostic imaging of the breasts. This area of sonography is very crucial in the
effective detection of breast cancer and it is also used to help monitor tumors in the breasts.
